Site Design With Vaastu Shastra

By Doug Caverly

Would you like to improve your website? Then utilize vaastu shastra - "the science of direction that combines all the five elements of nature and balances them with man and materials."

That's the recommendation of Dr. Smita Narang, author of the new book Web Vastu.

Dr. Narang explained her theory in a Reuters article. "Just as the world comprises of the five basic elements, each Web site has five elements and these need to be in balance with one another," she said. "Earth is the layout, fire is the color, air is the HTML, space is name of the Web site, and water is the font and graphics."

Proponents of vaastu shastra are not all guaranteeing surefire results. Brijesh Agarwal of Indiamart has seen varying outcomes with the five sites his company redesigned using vaastu shastra.

"We have found that on three sites the number of hits has increased by 60 percent but the other two sites have not been affected," Agarwal said.

He also admitted uncertainty as to what might have caused the upswings. "I can't say for definite that the positive results are due to vaastu or due to increased marketing, but I hope that vaastu has helped."

But if you're worried that the "paanchbhootas" of your website might be out of balance, vaastu shastra could be something for you to check into.

As Dr. Narang notes, when "the element in each quadrant" is "honored and . . . kept in balance," "this creates powerful and beneficial conditions, which draw business towards the owner."
